Sea Fever Empty
PostSubject: Sea Fever   Sea Fever Icon_minitimeThu Feb 14, 2008 8:09 pm

Not my work, I actually rather dislike poetry, save for two poems, this is one of them, and well, being nautical, it has popped into my head of late.

"Sea-Fever"
I must down to the seas again, to the lonely sea and the sky,
And all I ask is a tall ship and a star to steer her by,
And the wheel's kick and the wind's song and the white sail's shaking,
And a grey mist on the sea's face, and a grey dawn breaking.

I must down to the seas again, for the call of the running tide
Is a wild call and a clear call that may not be denied;
And all I ask is a windy day with the white clouds flying,
And the flung spray and the blown spume, and the sea-gulls crying.

I must down to the seas again, to the vagrant gypsy life,
To the gull's way and the whale's way where the wind's like a whetted knife;
And all I ask is a merry yarn from a laughing fellow-rover
And quiet sleep and a sweet dream when the long trick's over.

By John Masefield (1878-1967).
(English Poet Laureate, 1930-1967.)

Amazing when you've heard something so many times and it can still bring a tear to your eye. My grandfather ran away to sea on one of the last really commercially viable sailing cargo ships (save the German "flying P line") and I have a book passed down, (as well as a painting of the ship from Calcutta) by John Masefield, called "The Wanderer of Liverpool" which was the ship's name, because John Masefield also sailed on it.

Edit: PS: Doah! I just realized this is a "forum for real time RP" and my post certainly wasn't that, but it obviously didn't belong in copper penny publishing, so I just wanted to say that if a mod feels it would be most appropriate, perhaps this should be moved to off topic...
