Welcome to the cause Dermid! Hopefully soon we'll have others joining us to find fortune in the West Indies!

By the way, how do you like the forums?

Oh and do you have that flag up for vote? Let me know the link so I can vote for it!

Hello as well. I'm thinking that I'd love to see what you guys are all about and possibly join up as a Frenchwoman with ties to Scotland and the Jacobite cause.

Welcome!

Me personally, I'm here to find a group of mature players that I can enjoy this game that looks fantastic. That is my main goal. From there, I think this idea that is based on history will serve as a nice model to let us RP in the game and have a consistent mission. I really think it will add to the guild to have a unique slant in the world that is history driven.

I kind of know Hamish MacBane through a different game, NWN - we both DM'd and visited a small community site. I happened upon the intro and messaged him and then realized that we had done stuff together before - so it is a small world.

I consider myself pretty laid back and certainly I'm not going to be yelling about OOC stuff but I'm very hopeful we can find a great group where the standard is all IC stuff and we can cooperate and have fun.

Anyway, welcome again. I'm hopefully going to get a bio up IC here in the next day or so.

I think there is PLENTY of opportunity to be a French woman with or without ties to Scottland. Basically an enemy of the Brits is a friend! In fact, I think we need higher ups on that front to solidify the story of the guild.

If you have questions, fire away. I can at least give my thoughts and I'm sure Hamish will pipe in as well.

Hamish - I like the forums. A little different look but very fitting I think. Good work!

Well, for a little background as to who I am, in the OOC sense...

I'm 21, from New Orleans but currently living in California, going to school as a history major and eventually on my way to law school.

As for MMO-wise, I played my share of MUSHes back in the day (never muds, I really only enjoyed the RP aspect). I was pretty wary of the monthly fee system, so I didn't jump on the MMO bandwagon until WoW, which I got the week of release since I was a Warcraft fan and thought it might be fun. Little did I know what that game would become! Oh, and I'm a huge fan of this period and related games like Age of Sail and such.

After looking over what you guys have put out, however little it is thus far, I really like the concept here and I had been prowling for a good RP-oriented French-colors guild.

I'd also agree that the historic framework you've already set up is absolutely excellent for RPs sake. Much more exciting than a "we're an awesome naval squadron." Which is not to say such groups are inherently flawed...just that I feel this concept really will be superior for RP.

My biggest problem for now is figuring out what class I want to be Wink.

Hey there Ophelie. Welcome to the Confederacy.

I'm going to be getting some more info up shortly, a backstory, etc. We're still looking for a couple more officer types that want to help build out the idea so perhaps as we get to know you and you us and you decide if you want to make the Confederacy your home (that was alot of you's..hehe), perhaps you might fit into a charter member role as an officer. (we aren't doing anything fancy with leadership, the society as a whole will be more like a company....leaders, but with society consensus). As Dermid mentioned we are certainly looking for those wishing to play out the French role of our little endeavor, as they are our host country and benefactors. So your story so far would be a great fit, especially this early on. Hope you enjoy your stay and feel free to throw out ideas, etc for what you think would be cool to see in the Society.

Thanks for the warm welcome!

The idea of being like a company is the perfect way to go with this kind of idea. Just by the nature of the initial story...most people would be in because they wanted to be in, and could just as easily leave. Seems sort of like a mercenary group in that respect, where there's always going to be a sense of danger, but at the end of the day, if nobody wants to be there, there's nothing holding them back.

One thing I would say, though, is that while democracy and such is the way to go on a wider level, there should still be something akin to a more formal structure for those times when things are happening on a smaller, faster scale. A system that means little or nothing 90% of the time but is there for that other 10%. Democracy in the middle of a battle can get tricky!

So yeah, that's what I've thought about thus far. My mind is stewing in ideas Wink.

Good points. Certainly I envision the officers taking charge in the various "combat missions" we might find ourselves in. One of my main visions of the group is that we are able and willing to go into the thick of things to get supplies to our contested ports and to bring ports into contention, which will often mean running blockades, guarding our merchants with our privateer force, etc. I'd love to be the guys the navy looks to when they have a need. FLS has said you can't do it all as far as crafting, so we'll have to pick some niche areas I'm thinking to really be the specialists in those areas. I'm thinking of concentrating on areas that fighting ships would need. Of course we want to be going after the lucrative markets, so we'll have to be fluid in that level. So while I do mean a democracy in a sense, there will always be a "company direction" that we'll ask all of our members to work towards, but it'll be areas the members want to work towards.

I've added you to the forums as a recruit. If you choose to call us home, we can discuss moving you to member status in time. We are going for quality over quantity so we can build a society everyone wants to be a part of. So membership won't be instant, but likely will be faster for the first few to join based on their input and activity (which you are already doing great in.) I'm also going to build a small application so we can get some info on prospective members that join next.

Think as far as ideas I'm going to create a forum for members and recruits to discuss there. That way if we hit on something we really like we can keep it in the guild.

Oh, also as far as professions, we are going to take in privateers and freetraders/merchants for now. As we aren't a navy society RP wise it doesn't seem to fit to allow naval players, but if there is a good RP reason I'd certainly be open to it. It does limit us in ships, but hopefully we'll have a good relationship with actual naval societies as we supply them and help in our own little way...

Hello, I am also very intrigued by this clan and would very much so like to join. I was previously CEO of Condottieri Security Organization but because of a fall out of support for PotBS within our ranks ConSec was disbanded. Seeing what you've posted on the Flying Labs forums and these I've decided this is the place for me, if my application is accepted of course.

Thanks, I'm quite sure now I'll be calling The Confederacy home, so I'll be looking for the app Wink. On a side note, I happened to noticed that "Confederacy" is misspelled at the top of the page, so you might want to fix that!

I also agree with you that naval characters should be few and far between. Their big ships certainly are good for major naval operations, but are pretty horrible from a blockade-running perspective. They'd slow down the merchants enormously, which isn't good when you're running. Of course, when one is being more defensive, they're excellent. Still, when one imagines blockade-running and flexible escort, one imagines frigates first and foremost.

Similar to a mercenary company. They're going to have better-trained smaller arms, with maybe a hint of something heavy...but otherwise that's a military job. So having some officers is great for flexibility, but too many would prove to be cumbersome for anything other than large-scale escorts in very specific scenarios.

As for crafting, I think that due to the nature of the system where one person can't do it all, crafting needs to be highly coordinated between everyone. Nobody should be forced to do any crafting they don't feel fits their character, naturally, but there should be the information in place to ensure that everyone knows what may or may not be hugely in need.

Along similar lines, I would imagine that there should be some emphasis on establishing a production chain where high-end finished goods could be supplied, not simply the mid-range finished goods. Selling whole ships, for example, with components coming largely, if not wholly, from within. That idea simply seems to me to be quite fitting for a company with a more merchant focus. Of course there could be problems with certain people wanting to be in certain spots along the chain of production, but I would imagine profit-sharing could fix any possible worries.

Hey there Mr. Merc. Welcome to the site. As I mentioned to Ophelie we are certainly looking for those that wish to find an RP home, but we are taking time before we give membership. I'll show you as a recruit and we'll go from there. Feel free to jump in the conversations and let us all get to know you. I'm sorry to hear about your group, but perhaps their loss will be our gain. Thanks for your interest in the Confederacy.

Thanks on the misspelling Ophelie, hehe..I hadn't noticed how badly I butchered it up there. Welcome to the Condeferacy. lol!

Thanks for the greeting and i figured that you didnt notice the post Ophelie because of the close timings of the two. But a little bit about me OOC...

Im 19 and currently enrolled at the University of Texas San Antonio. Grew up in Dallas though so I still consider that my home town. I played SWG for about 2 years and then SOE killed it Crying or Very sad . Never RP'ed in SWG because im more of a realist, and quite frankly i find it difficult to RP in a fantasy world. With PotBS being relatively historically accurate and myself being a history buff I cant wait to jump into character! I do speak some french, spanish and a tiny bit of farsi.

My IC deffinitly wont be named MrMerc and im trying to go with an Irish and possibly Hessian Province of Germany. Because.. well... thats what I am in real life!

I hope to pick up some actual spanish and french sayings here and there, though I don't speak or understand either myself. It'll be fun to learn a few things here and there just as my character might.

By the way, there is now an Ideas forum open for members and recruits so we can start building this thing up some. Thanks again for everyone's interest.
